Morrigan Collection Pics: Otakon Lolita Fashion Show 2010!
10th-Aug-2010 04:30 pm
This year, Morrigan was honored to participate in Otakon's North American Designers' Fashion Show, which took place on Friday, July 30th, 2010 in Baltimore, Md.

The show was really fabulous this year! Not only were the designers all totally different from each other stylistically, and all at the top of their game with beautiful designs, but the show had a really amazing professional runway and a huge lighting rig! There were over 600 people in attendance, and it was very exciting showing our new pieces to the crowd!

Luckily photographer Stacey Besst was in the audience, and he was able to get some beautiful shots of Morrigan's lineup:

For the first look, I wanted to do something that combined Victoriana with a nod to the Elegant Gothic Aristocrat look, but overall have a playful, doll-like feel to it, as if you'd found an antique porcelain doll in your attic. Yuffie Bunny is modeling a striped 100% silk shantung coat based on an 1880s childs' formal coat, with an asymmetrical hem and mismatched wood-and-bone buttons and a gathered ruffle trim. It is fully lined in heavy duchess satin to give it the right "body," and comes with a matching ruffled skirt.

Although it's slightly harder to see, here is a back shot of the outfit as well (photographer unknown).

Next, Amara modeled this tartan bustle ensemble, which you may remember as Morrigan's special holiday outfit from 2009! I think it looks amazing with her hairstyle.

Next, Kathy is modeling a floor-length chiffon gown with lace trim (I'm secretly calling it the "Dracula's Bride" dress... somehow it just seems like something they would wear!). This gown is currently in development for Morrigan's winter collection, so look out for it to be in pre-orders later this year!

I also included a picture of me in the gown, so you can see how flexible the design is. In fact all of the parts of the gown, including the arms,  are on satin drawstrings and it can be adjusted to be a perfect fit for everyone!

The next look, modeled by Susan, was a dress I designed to be a cross between a Vivienne Westwood / British royalty sort of look, but with a distinctly Victorian antique doll edge to it, to match the rest of the collection. Actually this item was based on an 1880s womens dress from a museum collection, but shortened to lolita length. The fabric is a very stiff silk taffeta with a plaid pattern. The item also includes a matching headbow.

Since the image from the show is a bit far away to see some details, I included a second photo of myself (looking quite silly :)  in the dress. The velvet sash in the second photo was made by Kelsey of I Do Declare!

The last two items, modeled by Lexy and Aisha, are actually variants on the same dress! This is the long/natural-kei length and short/lolita length versions of the new Moby Dick Nautical One Piece! This item comes in a variety of colors (including an all-black version with a gold silkscreen), but is shown here in black with a white print, with white collar and red chiffon bow, and white with navy blue print, with navy blue collar and chiffon bow in the short version.

Aisha and Lexy are both wearing matching berets that are hand-embroidered with a special nautical version of the Morrigan logo. This is an accessory item from the same set.

I'm still putting the finishing touches on the Moby Dick pre-ordering page, but all of the items in the set will be available for sale in a few days. Meanwhile, here is a fabulous image of the new collection taken by photographer Kathy Chee:

Thank you to the amazing women who modeled the collection at Otakon, and to the organizers and other designers for having things run so smoothly! It was a great experience and we're looking forward to doing the show again next year!

Wow! I am completely in awe of this collection! You've really hit your stride, and I can't wait to reserve a few pieces :)

Many thanks for the praise! I'm glad you like the direction we're moving in. :)

Some of the actual samples used in the show above will be available on the Morrigan etsy soon -- I'll post about it when they're ready for purchasing.

Thanks, I loved all of the designs from the fashion show too -- I feel like it was particularly excellent this year!

Moby Dick is really taking me a long time because of the special products. This is the first time we have a skirt, one piece, beret, headbow, and matching bag all in the same collection (oy vey! ;)

But I think in a few days it'll go online. Of course I'll post here and on EGL when that happens. :)

I'm having a breakdown trying to decide which length Moby Dick OP I want!!! ;_;
10th-Aug-2010 09:43 pm (UTC)
haha! I think you'd look freaking adorable in either length. Depends on whether you'd wear a longer style more or if you'd get more use out of the short version!

I've been really into longer garments recently so I think for myself, I'll probably end up wearing the longer one more. But of course with a shorter dress, you can always layer other slightly longer skirts underneath, so it's versatile!

I still need to photograph the fancy all-black gothypants version of the OP too. Actually that's my favorite (nobody is surprised...). I love the different blacks -- the chiffon ribbon, the satin of the collar, and the matte cotton of the body of the dress. And gold silkscreen is always a good thing. :)

Oh my goodness, these are gorgeous: the stiped coat, the Dracula's bride gown and the plaid dress I adore especially. And I love the longer length Moby Dick piece too. Goodness me! Wow. I can't wait 'till it's possible to get hold of such stuff :). Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Those are my favorites too actually. XD

I think by the end of this week, the moby dick items will be on sale (the whole set.. which is a dress, skirt, beret, headbow, and bag).

The winter collection will include a coat and the dracula's bride dress, but that will come out in a few months. :)

It was fantastic to show along side you! I'm still in pieces trying to decide which moby dick color way to order~! I'm torn between the Cream and navy and the black and gold!

Hell yeah your collection was AMAZING girl! The show really had an incredible lineup from all the designers.

I really love the I Do Declare look and they royalty theme you've got going on.

Hit up black and gold -- I think it'd be amazing with your hair.

(Also I need to email you about the commission... but of course I want it in black, hahaha, AS USUAL).
10th-Aug-2010 10:57 pm (UTC)
wow, your stuff looks so wonderful!! are you going to be doing the moby dick collection in larger sizes? (i hope so -- i've been anticipating the pre-order so i hope i can get in on it!)
11th-Aug-2010 12:45 am (UTC)
Hey thanks for the compliments! We are ABSOLUTELY going to do the whole collection in a full range of sizes -- from XS to 2X.

I will always be making plus sizes for every collection -- accommodating a full range is something I feel strongly about.

So yeah, you're all good no matter what size you wear. :) Watch this space for when the pre-orders go up!

{Edit: sorry, replied at first from the wrong account! ;_; }

All of your items for the show were gorgeous.

I have been in hyper mode over the Moby Dick line since it first walked on to the stage. Can't wait for you to put the pre-order page up so I can snatch the short version of the beautiful OP.

I'm still kicking myself for missing out on the Ravens series so I will not miss this one.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm really glad you liked the show.

I'm working hard to get the final moby dick page up for ordering -- and I'll definitely post here when it's ready, sometime this weekend. :)

hi hello! Sorry this comment is coming back to you so late. Actually I got married last week so everything has been on an insane hiatus until that was over. :)

I'm actually impatient about my own stuff!!! Currently I'm stuck in a sort of sizing hell.. it turns out that sizing items when they involve more than one measurement (like a skirt) to fit a large range of people is an inexact and crazily arbitrary science, and I want to make sure that my plus sized items fit properly and decently. For example, with a dress like the Moby Dick OP, there is a back-to-neck measurement, shoulder measurement, overbust and underbust measurement, sleeve cap measurement, etc. Oy vey! So I've been doing some market/fit research and seeing what people tend to like (it seems like Torrid and also Metamorphose have good LL sizing).

Although it's more difficult than I expected, I did get hold of some good sizing data, so with the help of my patternmaker, hopefully we can have the Moby Dick stuff out soon.

In good news, I guess you really only have to set up your blocks and sizing data once. So after this we should be ready to manufacture all sorts of items, including more complicated fits (tailored coats, etc). Of course those things are what I really love, coming from a traditional/Victorian classic gothic sort of mindset. :)

This whole process ahs definitely makes me respect patternmakers a lot though. Garment fit is really an misunderstood science!

I will be posting an official status update about the hold-up and process a bit later today.

Thanks again for your comment, and for being patient!

Posted a response to the comment below yours, but I'll repeat it here so I'm sure you get it in your inbox:

So yeah... hopefully we will be ready to order soon. I will certainly post here when that happens. And I apologize again for the unforseen delay. I guess snafus like this are a part of learning how to run a fashion company!
