This year, Morrigan was honored to participate in Otakon's North American Designers' Fashion Show, which took place on Friday, July 30th, 2010 in Baltimore, Md.
The show was really fabulous this year! Not only were the designers all totally different from each other stylistically, and all at the top of their game with beautiful designs, but the show had a really amazing professional runway and a huge lighting rig! There were over 600 people in attendance, and it was very exciting showing our new pieces to the crowd!
Luckily photographer
Stacey Besst was in the audience, and he was able to get some beautiful shots of Morrigan's lineup:
For the first look, I wanted to do something that combined Victoriana with a nod to the Elegant Gothic Aristocrat look, but overall have a playful, doll-like feel to it, as if you'd found an antique porcelain doll in your attic.
Yuffie Bunny is modeling a striped 100% silk shantung coat based on an 1880s childs' formal coat, with an asymmetrical hem and mismatched wood-and-bone buttons and a gathered ruffle trim. It is fully lined in heavy duchess satin to give it the right "body," and comes with a matching ruffled skirt.
Although it's slightly harder to see, here is a back shot of the outfit as well (photographer unknown).
Next, Amara modeled this tartan bustle ensemble, which you may remember as Morrigan's special holiday outfit from 2009! I think it looks amazing with her hairstyle.
Next, Kathy is modeling a floor-length chiffon gown with lace trim (I'm secretly calling it the "Dracula's Bride" dress... somehow it just seems like something they would wear!). This gown is currently in development for Morrigan's winter collection, so look out for it to be in pre-orders later this year!
I also included a picture of me in the gown, so you can see how flexible the design is. In fact all of the parts of the gown, including the arms, are on satin drawstrings and it can be adjusted to be a perfect fit for everyone!
The next look, modeled by Susan, was a dress I designed to be a cross between a Vivienne Westwood / British royalty sort of look, but with a distinctly Victorian antique doll edge to it, to match the rest of the collection. Actually this item was based on an 1880s womens dress from a museum collection, but shortened to lolita length. The fabric is a very stiff silk taffeta with a plaid pattern. The item also includes a matching headbow.
Since the image from the show is a bit far away to see some details, I included a second photo of myself (looking quite silly :) in the dress. The velvet sash in the second photo was made by Kelsey of
I Do Declare!
The last two items, modeled by Lexy and Aisha, are actually variants on the same dress! This is the long/natural-kei length and short/lolita length versions of the new Moby Dick Nautical One Piece! This item comes in a variety of colors (including an all-black version with a gold silkscreen), but is shown here in black with a white print, with white collar and red chiffon bow, and white with navy blue print, with navy blue collar and chiffon bow in the short version.
Aisha and Lexy are both wearing matching berets that are hand-embroidered with a special nautical version of the Morrigan logo. This is an accessory item from the same set.
I'm still putting the finishing touches on the Moby Dick pre-ordering page, but all of the items in the set will be available for sale in a few days. Meanwhile, here is a fabulous image of the new collection taken by photographer Kathy Chee:
Thank you to the amazing women who modeled the collection at Otakon, and to the organizers and other designers for having things run so smoothly! It was a great experience and we're looking forward to doing the show again next year!
